Understanding Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) Trading Costs
Investing in the Bangladesh share market involves various costs that go beyond the purchase price of a stock. To trade effectively, you must account for brokerage commissions and government-mandated taxes.
1. Brokerage Commission
Unlike some global markets, there is no fixed "zero brokerage" standard in Bangladesh yet. Brokerage houses typically charge between 0.25% to 0.50% of the total trade value. This is often negotiable for high-volume traders.
2. AIT (Advance Income Tax)
The Government of Bangladesh levies an Advance Income Tax (AIT) of 0.05% on the total value of share transactions. This is collected at the source by the exchange and the brokerage house.
3. DSE Transaction Fees (Laga Charge)
The Dhaka Stock Exchange charges a small transaction fee, often called the "Laga charge," which is currently 0.025% of the traded value for both buy and sell sides.
4. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) for Individuals
As of the 2024-25 fiscal year, individual investors are exempt from Capital Gains Tax on listed securities for profits up to Tk 50 lakh. Any profit exceeding this threshold is subject to a 15% CGT.
Pro Tip: Watch the Breakeven
In Bangladesh, trading costs are relatively high (total round-trip cost is often >0.8%). Use our calculator to identify your "Breakeven Price" — the minimum price you must sell at just to cover the combined cost of brokerage and taxes.
