What is a Pip? "Pip" stands for Percentage in Point. In Forex, it is the smallest price move that a given exchange rate makes based on market convention. Most currency pairs are priced to four decimal places ($0.0001), so a pip is the fourth decimal digit.
Gold and Metals: For Gold (XAUUSD), a pip is typically considered 0.01 (one cent). Since a standard lot of Gold is 100 ounces, a 1 pip move equals $1.00 profit or loss.
Indices and Crypto: In these markets, traders usually talk in "Points" or whole dollar moves. If Bitcoin moves from $60,000 to $60,001, that is a 1-point move. The value of that point is equal to the number of units (or fraction of a coin) you hold.
Why it matters: Without knowing the pip value, you cannot calculate your Position Size correctly. Professional traders decide how much money they want to risk (e.g., $100) and then calculate how many lots they can buy based on their stop-loss distance in pips.
