Understanding Sector Rotation on the DSE

In the Dhaka Stock Exchange, money rarely flows into all stocks at the same time. Instead, professional traders and institutional investors (like Mutual Funds and Banks) move their capital from one sector to another in a process called Sector Rotation.

Key Sectors in the Bangladesh Market

There are over 20 sectors on the DSE, but the following "Big 8" usually drive the market direction:

• Banking: The backbone of the market with the largest market capitalization. High dividends and stable growth.
• Pharmaceuticals: Known for high-quality companies and consistent earnings. Often acts as a defensive sector during market crashes.
• Textiles: Closely tied to the country's export performance. Highly sensitive to global economic trends and exchange rates.
• Fuel & Power: Includes power plants and energy distributors. Known for high yields but regulated pricing.
• IT & Telecommunications: Led by giants like Grameenphone (GP) and Robi. These stocks have a massive impact on the DSEX index movement.

How to use Sector Ranking?

By tracking the daily or weekly performance of these sectors, you can identify:

• Market Leadership: If the market is rising and the Banking sector is leading, the rally is likely sustainable.
• Divergence: If the DSEX index is rising but only 1 or 2 sectors are positive, it may indicate a weak rally driven by specific large-cap stocks.
• Oversold Opportunities: Sectors that have been at the bottom of the ranking for a long period often present "Value Buy" opportunities before they rotate back to the top.
