DSE Zakat on Shares Calculator

A simple and precise tool to calculate the mandatory Zakat (2.5%) on your Bangladesh stock portfolio and liquid wealth.

Zakat on Stock Investments

Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam and is mandatory for every Muslim who meets the Nisab (threshold of wealth). If you are an investor on the Dhaka Stock Exchange, your shares and the cash in your BO account are considered "zakatable wealth."

How Zakat is Calculated on Shares

There are generally two accepted methods for calculating Zakat on stock market investments:

1. The Market Value Method (Recommended for Traders)

If you buy and sell shares with the intention of making a profit (trading/short-term), the entire market value of your portfolio is subject to Zakat.
Formula: (Market Value of Shares + Cash in BO Account) × 2.5%

2. The Net Asset/Proportionate Method (For Long-term Investors)

If you hold shares long-term purely for dividends and have no intention of selling, some scholars suggest that Zakat should only be paid on the "Zakatable Assets" (Current Assets like cash, inventory, receivables) of the company, excluding the fixed assets (factory, land, machinery). This method is more complex and requires looking at each company's balance sheet.

When to Calculate Zakat?

Zakat is calculated once every Lunar (Hijri) year. Many investors in Bangladesh choose to calculate and distribute their Zakat during the holy month of Ramadan, though it can be done at any time once a full year has passed since your wealth reached the Nisab.

Important Considerations

  • Dividends: Any dividend income received and still held in your BO account or bank account on the Zakat date should be added to your total wealth.
  • Unrealized Losses: You pay Zakat based on the *current market value*, not your purchase price. If your portfolio is in a loss, your Zakat amount will naturally be lower.
  • Margin Loans: If you have a margin loan, you should subtract the loan amount from your total portfolio value before calculating Zakat, as you only pay on your own equity.

Purifying Your Wealth

Beyond Zakat, if you hold stocks that are not fully Shariah-compliant (e.g., companies with high interest-based debt), some scholars recommend "Purification" (Sadaqah) of the portion of dividends earned from non-halal activities. Use our tool to calculate the basic 2.5% requirement.
