What is Market Capitalization?
Market Capitalization (or Market Cap) is the total value of all of a company's shares of stock. It is calculated by multiplying the current stock price by the total number of outstanding shares. In India, companies are typically categorized as:
- Large Cap: Top 100 companies by market cap (e.g., Reliance, TCS, HDFC Bank).
- Mid Cap: Companies ranked from 101 to 250.
- Small Cap: Companies ranked from 251 onwards.
Free-Float vs. Total Market Cap
While **Total Market Cap** considers all shares, indices like the Nifty 50 and Sensex use **Free-Float Market Cap**. This only includes shares that are available for trading by the general public, excluding promoter holdings, government holdings, and other locked-in shares.
Why Index Weightage Matters
Stocks with higher weightage have a greater impact on the index's movement. For example, a 2% move in Reliance Industries will move the Nifty significantly more than a 2% move in a smaller constituent like BPCL. Understanding weightage helps traders anticipate index movements during major corporate events or earnings releases.
Rebalancing
The NSE rebalances its indices twice a year (March and September). During this time, stocks may be added or removed from the Nifty 50 based on their market cap and liquidity, leading to significant buying or selling by index funds.
