Understanding Option Trading Costs in India
Option trading (F&O) on the NSE involves a different fee structure compared to regular equity trading. Many beginners forget that "net profit" is what matters after accounting for high transaction costs.
1. New Lot Sizes (2024 Update)
The NSE has periodically revised lot sizes to keep contract values affordable. Currently, the lot size for Nifty 50 is 25, and for Bank Nifty, it is 15. Our calculator is always updated with the latest SEBI-mandated lot sizes.
2. STT on Option Premiums
Unlike equity delivery where STT is on the total value, for Option Selling, STT is 0.0625% of the premium received. For Option Buying, there is no STT at the time of purchase, but it is applicable if you sell the position or if it is exercised.
3. Exchange Transaction Charges
NSE and BSE charge a transaction fee on the premium value. For options, this is typically higher than equity (approx 0.05% of premium). 18% GST is then applied to the sum of your Brokerage and Transaction charges.
The "₹20/Order" Rule
Most discount brokers like Zerodha and Groww charge a flat ₹20 per executed order for F&O. This means your total brokerage for a single "Buy and Sell" cycle is ₹40, regardless of the number of lots in that order.
