Mastering the "Greeks" in Indian Option Trading
In the fast-paced world of Nifty and BankNifty options, understanding the Greeks is what separates professional traders from gamblers. These metrics tell you exactly how your option premium will react to market movements and time.
The 4 Essential Greeks
- Delta (Δ): Measures how much your option price changes for every ₹1 move in the index. For ATM options, Delta is typically around 0.50.
- Theta (Θ): The rate of time decay. It tells you how much value your option loses every single day as it approaches expiry.
- Gamma (Γ): The rate of change in Delta. High Gamma during expiry days (Hero-or-Zero trades) is what causes massive spikes in option premiums.
- Vega (ν): Sensitivity to Implied Volatility (IV). High IV makes options expensive; low IV makes them cheaper.
Pro Tip: Expiry Day Decay
On weekly expiry days (Tuesday for FinNifty, Wednesday for BankNifty, Thursday for Nifty), Theta decay accelerates rapidly. Option buyers should look for high Gamma setups, while sellers benefit from the rapid erosion of extrinsic value.
