Tax Treatment

Interest from US Savings Bonds is exempt from State and Local taxes. Federal tax is deferred until you cash the bond or it matures (30 years).

Understanding I-Bonds

Series I Savings Bonds (I-Bonds) are a low-risk savings product from the US Treasury. They are unique because they earn interest based on both a fixed rate and a variable inflation rate.

Composite Rate

The total interest rate for an I-Bond is the "Composite Rate." It is adjusted every six months (in May and November) based on changes in the Consumer Price Index (CPI-U).

The 5-Year Rule

You must hold a savings bond for at least one year. If you cash it in before **5 years**, you lose the last three months of interest as a penalty. After 5 years, there is no penalty.

Tax Benefits

US Savings Bonds offer two significant tax advantages:

  • State & Local Tax Exemption: The interest you earn is 100% exempt from state and local income taxes.
  • Tax Deferral: You don't have to pay federal tax on the interest until you cash the bond or it reaches maturity (30 years).
  • Education Exclusion: If used for qualified higher education expenses, the interest may be completely federal tax-free (subject to income limits).
