Warrant Trading Tips

1. Company vs Structured

Company warrants (e.g., -WA, -WB) are issued by the company itself and usually have long expiries (up to 5 years). Structured warrants (e.g., -CA, -CB) are issued by investment banks, typically cash-settled, and expire in 6-12 months.

2. Beware of Time Decay

Warrants are decaying assets. As the expiration date approaches, the premium will naturally shrink to zero. Avoid holding high-premium out-of-the-money warrants near expiration.

The premium is the percentage difference between the cost of acquiring the underlying mother share through the warrant (Warrant Price * Exercise Ratio + Exercise Price) compared to buying the mother share directly in the open market. A lower premium means the warrant is priced closer to its intrinsic value.

Gearing indicates how much leverage the warrant provides. If the gearing is 5x, the warrant is 5 times cheaper than the mother share. Theoretically, a 1% movement in the mother share could lead to a 5% movement in the warrant price (excluding other factors like time decay).
The exercise ratio (or conversion ratio) dictates how many warrants are required to convert into ONE mother share. For example, a ratio of 5 means you need 5 warrants (plus the exercise price) to get 1 mother share.
